Tucked Away Haven

Mark 6:31 And he said to  them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and  rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure  even to eat.

There is a place that exists where being my true self is not a struggle.  Where a heart is free to dream, find peace and feel it’s most comfortable.  A tucked away place that  surrounds  like a warm blanket.  My bedroom is the first place I go when I come in the door, the last place I leave from in the morning.  It’s my most favorite place to be much like God’s presence.   It’s the place where frustrations melt away, and the hope of another day begins. A place to steal away, where beauty is captured and safety is felt.  Rest for our weary souls and refreshment to our spirits.

Let me inspire you to “Arise” and create a beautiful bedroom retreat where you can forget the worries of the day and be at peace. Here are some pointers to create a cozy restful place:

The Gift

June 16, 2012 033Each day of life is a gift.  God has made us all different with special abilities and qualities, fearfully and wonderfully made in His image.  Using our gift to bring a smile, comfort or encouragement to another is a blessing.  Sometimes we don’t see the blessing or look hard enough to find a blessing.

God has uniquely created me to find beauty in the ordinary…even though we may be in a tough economy or difficult circumstances, we can still create  beauty and extend warmth and comfort to others.  Sometimes a simple meal and the creation of a beautiful table scape is just the right touch to say “You’re special to me”  We can go to the “effort” to make something beautiful for another and show love.

Occasionally someone will tell me that perhaps going to that much effort or trouble is “unnecessary”  for the sake of practicality. But we miss the point and miss out on the blessingIT IS A GIFT freely given and shared.

With the rising cost of food and going out to eat, now is the best time to create those same special experiences in your own home.  Make your favorite dish (nothing fancy!) but create a warm and inviting table setting for ambiance.  My table setting is informal with the “cup” added for soup instead of a salad plate.  This setting was for a special friend with her birthday gift sitting to the left.  It’s also a nice idea to have grapes and cheese on the table to snack on waiting for the meal.  You should serve your meal 30 minutes within the guests arrival time!

Here is a simple diagram for setting the table.   For an informal setting you really only need your plates, fork, spoon and knife.  Remember forks to the left and knife and spoon to the right.  One glass in the upper right corner and you are ready to go informally!informal_place_setting_picture_largeRemember, this is a gift and it comes from the heart.

Pure Imagination

diningFirst you see it in your heart and then you bring it to the table.  That’s what I did when I had to find a way to make a small dining room look big in a rental home (oh did I mention I can’t paint!).   Thinking out of the box is required and not being afraid to mix and match items.  I know it’s hard for someone to do if you think in “sets.”  Sets are in the past…I see today’s décor as eclectic and original.  The last thing to do is make your “home” look like a model.  Be you and display the things you love!

The first thing I needed to do was bring in some pattern because the walls were so white.  If you can’t paint put pattern on the windows and the floor.  Add lots of warmth in rich woods (yes, you can mix…don’t be afraid) and fabric on the chairs.  The two head chairs are a beautiful velvety red; since I love red I wanted to incorporate it somewhere without it overpowering.  I then, brought in our amazing antique parsons bench and added interesting colorful pillows which can be moved when guests visit. This one seats two at the table very comfortably.  To top it off, two off white provincial chairs given to me by a friend.  I think they add a nice punch to the color scheme.  Lately I want to simplify so I adorned the tabletop with this simple yet gorgeous fall silk.new dining

Amazing rich and colorful curtains frame the archways and a lovely cherry server sets the right tone.  There…done!

Remember to think out of the box and have FUN with your home…now invite guests over for a delicious meal.  Next time we will talk about setting a gorgeous table!
